Question: A/C not working

I have had the system tested and told the compressor is working. They did a leak, evacuation and test to see any leaks. Charged the system and got it working but stated the clutch was shot on the compressor. Could it be the switch or an actual leak in the system? I've been told if it was the clutch that it would be making a noise if it wasn't working when the A/C is turned on.
